Alex Usborne’s acclaimed documentary in Channel 4's Short Stories series, directed by Kim Flitcroft.
Winner of the International Film Award at the Palermo Film Festival, 1992.
Brendan Ingle has been training boxers out of the St Thomas' Gym in Sheffield since the '60s and is still going strong. He was awarded an MBE in 1998 for his services and contributions to British boxing and work with young people in the Sheffield area.
Producer Alex Usborne says, “After our first boxing film won prizes, Channel 4 immediately commissioned a second one. So we spent two or three years hanging out in boxing gyms getting to know boxers and getting to know that world. We were outside Brendan Ingle’s gym looking down at the Lower Don Valley and realising that the steelworks weren't there and that there was a notion of Sheffield trying to regenerate itself through media and shopping. We went on to make Tales From a Hard City which was a very successful film for us.”
