The Acid House

The Acid House

The Granton Star Cause

THE ACID HOUSE

Three twisted tales from the seamy side of Scotland and the mind of Irvine Welsh.

THE GRANTON STAR CAUSE: in the same day a young Leith lad is dumped by his football team, his girlfriend and his parents, arrested and beaten up by the police and turned into a fly by God, whom he meets in a pub.

THE SOFT TOUCH: a man is too soft to do anything when his wife moves in with the thug upstairs.

THE ACID HOUSE: while tripping on acid, CoCo Brown is struck by lightning, causing him to switch bodies with a newborn baby.

Winner - AMC Audience Award

Nominated - Grand Prize (Gold), Catalonian International Film Festival

“Raw, rude and as fierce as a shot of methamphetamine, The Acid House is a blast of manic energy in the form of a film. It marks the sensational feature debut of director Paul McGuigan, a photographer and documentary maker who adapted three stories by Irvine Welsh, the author of  Trainspotting.

The Acid House portrays the Scottish underclass with nasty, surreal humor. Not only are the characters scabrous, caustic and void of sentiment, but the film even seems to thrive on its snubbing of all the implicit rules of cinematic good taste.

When a lesser talent brings that kind of punky insolence to a film, it's usually a bust, but McGuigan is such an explosive talent, and so fired up with audacity and imagination, that The Acid House is elevated by his cheekiness rather than cheapened by it.”
