A young woman inherits a house in East Jerusalem only to find it occupied by a Palestinian woman, her father's secret mistress. When her father, a Jewish-American bookseller, is killed in a road accident in Jerusalem, Hannah travels to the Middle East for the first time, to scatter his ashes and tie up the loose ends left behind by a life suddenly lost. The loose ends lead in unexpected directions: in Jerusalem Hannah discovers that her father had a whole other life, and a family of which she and her mother knew nothing. The house on Wadi Hilweh Street is the starting point for unravelling her father's secret past. This bitter-sweet journey of discovery leads Hannah to confront her own disappointments and expectations, as she mends her fractured relationship with her father, to embark on her own unfolding and unexpected love story.
